One of the hiking gems of Southern Australia is the Great South West Walk beginning in Portland and covering a 250 kilometre loop through three National Parks. Accessible for most ages and abilities, the trail has been developed for short loop walks, day hikes and overnight hikes of up to 14 days amongst pristine hardwood forests, the rugged Southern Ocean and the beautiful Glenelg River. Packed with superb vistas and an ever changing scenery, the trails and facilities are maintained by Friends of Great South West Walk volunteers with support from ParksVictoria, and has a fantastic camping infrastructure.
The Great South West Walk offers a wonderful experience for discovering the diversity of native flora and fauna in Australia's Great South, including a mainland Australian Fur Seal Colony, Australia's only mainland Gannet Rookery and the chance to see Blue and Southern Right Whales as they pass by the coast. With 17 short sections that make up the complete loop, the Great South West Walk is ideal for the intrepid camper or those needing their nightly comforts, with Portland and Nelson making ideal bases for discovering the walk.
