Coast Guard Portland Flotilla VF17

Overview

Coast Guard Portland is part of the National Coast Guard Organization (AVCGA) and is a totally volunteer run organization. Our primary function is to provide a search and rescue organization and to this purpose we have a rescue vessel on 24/7 standby which is located in the canal in the Port of Portland. We also operate a communications base which we operate on a regular basis and on demand when required. We also perform regular community information and education sessions, for instance we recently provided speakers and guided tours for the local Probus group and the local cubs and scouts.
Our typical operation involves assisting recreational fishermen who have broken down but we have been involved in a range of other activities such as Medivac from passing commercial and cruise ships. We have also been involved in a number of searches at sea for missing persons.
In these tasks we regularly work with other organizations; esp the Local and Water Police, SES, SL, CFA and Ambos.

There is a large range of roles for volunteers to be involved in. The most obvious been vessel crew and skippers, vessel mechanics and maintenance personnel, radio operators and a wide range of administration duties.
